Where to Stay in Amsterdam

The best neighbourhoods, hotels and booking tips

Amsterdam's hotel scene runs from canal-house B&Bs that haven't been remodelled since the seventies to ultra-modern design hotels along the IJ waterfront. Where you sleep should be chosen as much for the canal you wake up to as the room.

Booking Tips for Amsterdam

  1. 1Book six to eight weeks ahead for April–September — tulip season and summer both fill the city fast.
  2. 2Many canal-house hotels have steep, narrow staircases and no lift; check listings carefully if mobility matters.
  3. 3Aim for a hotel within the A10 ring road and you'll walk or tram everywhere — anything further out adds 20+ minutes to your day.
  4. 4The city tax is a flat 12.5% of the room rate plus €3 per person per night — most hotels can't include it in the upfront price.
