Amalfi Coast

Where to Stay in Amalfi Coast

The best neighbourhoods, hotels and booking tips

The Amalfi Coast is hotel-decision-as-trip-decision: which village you sleep in dictates which ferries you take, which restaurants are walkable, and which view you wake to. Most visitors regret not staying longer — three nights minimum.

Best Areas to Stay in Amalfi Coast

Positano

Luxury

The picture-book village — pastel houses tumbling to a black-sand beach

Best for: Romantics, honeymooners, first-time visitors

Amalfi Town

Mid-range

Central on the coast with the best ferry connections — slightly more practical, slightly less famous

Best for: First-time visitors, families, ferry-hoppers

Praiano

Mid-range

Quieter, less expensive village between Positano and Amalfi — sunsets are arguably the best on the coast

Best for: Repeat visitors, slower travellers

Ravello

Luxury

High above the coast — terraced gardens, classical music festival, a different (cooler, quieter) climate

Best for: Couples, music lovers, summer escapes from heat

Booking Tips for Amalfi Coast

  1. 1Book five to six months ahead for June and September — the coast's hotels routinely sell out earlier than the rest of Italy.
  2. 2Check how many stairs are between your room and the road; many "hotel pools" in Positano are 300 steps down.
  3. 3Many hotels close November to March — confirm dates before booking flights for the shoulder months.
  4. 4Travelling without a car? Pick a village right on the SITA bus / ferry route and you'll never need one.
